Establishing a Nonprofit Organization
What a Nonprofit Is, and What it Ain’t
Participants will have a clear understanding of the IRS’ definition of a public charity (reasons for losing tax exemption status), the purpose of a nonprofit; how it is formed as a business on the state level and assigned tax exempt status on the federal level and what that entails; the rules and expectations of the board of directors, ethics/conflicts of interest, purpose of the bylaws.
Nonprofit Doesn’t Mean, No Profit
Participants will learn the real costs of starting, running, and sustaining a nonprofit. They will also learn why generating consistent outside revenue is not only necessary, but why every nonprofit should have 10 streams of revenue for long-term sustainability (and how to get it).
The Alternatives to Starting a Nonprofit
Starting a nonprofit is starting a business. Upon completion of this module, participants will learn multiple ways to make an impact in their community without starting a business that requires knowledge, skills, capital, time, and energy.
Why You’re Not Ready for a Grant
Participants will have a clear understanding of the Funder’s perspective, why it takes more than a tax-exempt status to qualify for a grant, the difference between being eligible and qualified, and the red flags funders look for to eliminate organizations from the screening process. Participants will learn what steps to take to become Funder-ready, including all it takes to position their organization for consistent, outside funding.
What’s in a Name?
This course provides a clear understanding of the roles, responsibilities, and duties of the governing board, paid staff (1099 v W-2) and volunteers. Participants will understand the importance of titles as they relate to classification and labor law issues and their impact on the budget. Participants will learn how funders use the organization chart that graphically represents the organization’s structure, departments, roles, and responsibilities to determine a viable nonprofit.
